Petition Launched to Increase Canadian Duty Free Limits

28 Nov, 2011

Take action to increase our outdated and unreasonably low duty free allowances.

We are happy to announce that we have launched a petition requesting that the Minister of Finance institute a personal exemption of $200 for Canadians returning from stays of less than 48 hours in the United States.

Currently, Canadians are not permitted any duty free allowance for stays of less than 24 hours in the United States, and are only permitted a $50 duty free allowance for stays of more than 24 hours but less than 48 hours. Our American neighbours, however, are entitled to a $200 duty free allowance when returning from all stays in Canada of less than 48 hours.

You can sign the petition here to have your voice heard.

Remember, the more signatures we receive, the more likely your voice will be heard, so be sure to share the petition with your friends.

The limits imposed by the current "laws" are seldom enforced. As regular cross border shoppers we often purchase $150 of groceries and clothing, shoes etc... after only 3 or 4 hours in the USA. We do this 2 or 3 times a month.
We travel into the USA with NEXUS, back using the regular lines. Duty is seldom if ever charged. If the lines to Canada are huge, we fill out our NEXUS TDC and pay the duty/HST as appropriate.
We go for lunch in Bellingham, enjoy a beer or glass of wine that actually costs less than the meal. Thanks to a short sighted BC government, the food and beverage business has not had any of our business for over two years.

It sure seems to me that having a different and smaller Duty Limit than citizens of the United States is a violation of the Free Trade Agreement according to the pre-amble that was given to us when the free trade agreement was brought in.

The current rate is unrealistic and unfair. The amount should be raised to £400 for under 48 hours.
$750 for over 48 hours and $1500 for anything over. Or each permanent resident or citizen should be given a allowance allowance which can be tracked by passport or PR card. Which you have to present on return to Canada border. Canada needs to accept that these limits will benefit both countries.

We have always thought off but never actually been on a Duty Free Shopping trip to the US. Now that we have almost figured out were to go in order to find these "so called bargains" the realization that such trip would be pointless unless we remain 24 hours or longer e.g. pay for a Hotel/Motel in order to fit into the 48 hour Duty Free allowance category, we are once again confronted by yet another barrier curtailing Canadians from equal opportunities enjoyed by other contries.

Should be looked at annually or at least every two years
